Mississippi Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley inked his approval to the creation of the largest solar energy farm in the state’s history constructed near Clay and Lowndes County. It will be a 200-megawatt farm intended to supply renewable energy to cities across the southeast, including Starkville and Knoxville, Tennessee.
“The @OrigisEnergy project in Lowndes County will have 650K solar panels across 3,900 acres and produce enough electricity to power 42K homes,” Presley wrote on Social Media. “This $200M private investment will also include 50MW in battery storage.”
Solar energy generation is growing in the Golden Triangle region—including Clay, Lowndes and Oktibbeha County. The newly approved solar farm joins a pair of sites in the region that will generate 350 megawatts total.

The City of Starkville is a city in, and the county seat of, Oktibbeha County. Its the largest city in the Golden Triangle. Its nicknames are: “StarkVegas” and “Boardtown”. Starkville was founded in 1835 and named in honor of Revolutionary War hero General John Stark.
West Point’s nickname is: “Point City”. Its the county seat of Clay County, and it was founded in 1871. J. Wesley Caradine, an African American, was the first state representative for Clay County after it was established in 1871.
Historically, Clay County has a blend of African American, White and Native American lineage. West Point is the home of the Howlin’ Wolf Blues Museum. Each Labor Day weekend the town of West Point hosts the Prairie Arts Festival.
